NORTH FORT MYERS, Fla. — A fire broke out after a tree made contact with power lines on Slater Road near I-75 in North Fort Myers, according to Florida Forest Service.

The blaze caused a delay in traffic and a hazy view for drivers.

The North Fort Myers Fire Department, Lee County Sheriff’s Office and FFS Caloosahatchee had all hands on deck to battle the blaze.

The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office was also on the scene with their helicopter collecting buckets of water from nearby ponds.

North Fort Myers resident, Keith Snodgrass, said he first saw the brush fire around 1:00 pm and then witnessed it unfold throughout the evening.

“You can see the highway backed up and slowing down,” described Snodgrass.

He has faith that local fire crews would combat the flames.

“I know the fire crews in our local area are pretty good,” he assured.

According to Florida Forest Service, 95% of the fire has been contained and crews will remain putting out hotspots.
