CAPE CORAL, Fla – Members are getting some of their last rounds of golf in at Hunters Run Executive Golf Course.
The nine-hole course has been a staple in the Cape Coral community for more than 50 years.
This year golfers were eligible to purchase a half-year membership as the owner sold the property.
Members found out last week the property could be the future home of multi-unit housing if the area is approved for rezoning.
Neighbors say the closing of the course is sad enough. They say tearing up the green could cause irreversible damage.
“All the sudden let’s take up all the land and guess what? We’re going to have a swamp out here,” said Kim Beemster, who lives along the course.
Homeowners who live near the course say the neighborhood is already prone to flooding. They worried they’ll be underwater with a proposed build this big.
“I have no problem with the zoning change and stuff when it’s for the betterment of the community, but this zoning change would be detrimental to the course community,” said Beemster.
The zoning board is scheduled to meet on April 5, where officials will vote on rezoning the property.
Dozens of neighbors are now working on a petition opposing the build that will be presented at the meeting.
