Welcome To Fort Myers Beach

On Estero Island, Florida

SOUTHWEST FLORIDA – Law enforcement is holding an operation to crack down on all illegal activity on the roads in Southwest Florida.

This comes after a group of street racers shot an elderly couple at an intersection off of Milwaukee and Homestead Road in Lehigh Acres last week.

NBC2’s Madison Adams was part of the undercover operation.

Over 50 different first responders are working on this operation. The Lee County Sheriff’s Office, Fort Myers Police Department (FMPD), Florida Highway Patrol, Port Authority and Charlotte County deputies are some of the agencies involved.

Each agency is using its greatest resources which include helicopters, K-9s, drones and extra officers.

“We’ve brought all the tools out that we have. We brought extra deputies out from our patrol division, we have our traffic units out here, we have K-9 units out here, we also have our aviation out here for air support, and some of our electronic surveillance personnel, and our intelligence unit is also out here,” said an FMPD lieutenant. “We have all hands on deck out here to start taking care of this problem.”

Authorities said this is just the start of a new normal on our roads.

“It’s pretty much a zero tolerance… that’s what it’s boiled down to,” said a lieutenant of FMPD.

NBC2 saw law enforcement arrest four people in just a little over an hour last night. A man riding his dirt bike next to the road, a motorcyclist driving recklessly and a drunk driver who didn’t even have a license.

“We haven’t even got started yet all the crazies haven’t come out yet,” said a lieutenant of FMPD. “Our primary goal, especially tonight is to get the message to these groups who are out here causing these problems throughout our county that we’re not going to tolerate it we will take you to jail, we are going to write you tickets, we’re going to tow your cars, plain and simple at the end of the day.”

“There’s people out here, innocent people on the roadway and their activities could easily kill someone out here, and we don’t want to see that happen,” he said.

Law enforcement said they will continue to do these operations until illegal activity stops happening on the roads.
