VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla.– Daytona Beach Police shot and killed a man after he brandished a knife and slashed an officer in the face following a physical confrontation.

The Daytona Beach Police Department responded to a call about a suspicious person outside a Sunoco gas station this morning.They gave the man a trespass warning, and he left.

The business called about an hour later, saying the man had returned.

Daytona Beach police and Volusia County deputies, who were there for a different matter, both tried to detain the man.

A press release said a Volusia County Sergeant attempted to take hold of the suspects left arm, who began to fight the sergeant. The suspect took a knife from his pocket and stabbed a Daytona Beach Police officer in the upper left jaw line.

After the police officer was stabbed, he fired two shots at the suspect, according to a press release.

The suspect died in the altercation. The police officer is expected to make a full recovery.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement took over the ongoing investigation.
