On Estero Island, Florida

COLLIER COUNTY, Fla.– A dentist at Tamiami Trail Dental Care is charged with hundreds of child pornography charges.

According to the Collier County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO), Stephen Layton, 68, is charged with 100 counts of possession of child pornography and 100 counts of transmission of child pornography.

CCSO began its investigation after it received two cyber tips from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC).

NCMEC is one of the largest child protection organizations in the United States.

The organization fights to protect children and creates resources for them and the people who keep them safe.

NCMEC told CCSO about the possible transmission of child pornography.

Detectives got a search warrant for a suspected Dropbox account.

The search warrant revealed more than 1,000 sexually explicit files with children ages 5 to 16 years old, according to CCSO.

Reports said the files showed children “engaged in lewd exhibition of their genitalia.”

Detectives learned the transmission and possession of the images happened at Layton’s Naples home at 3432 Atlantic Circle and at his dental practice, Tamiami Trail Dental Care.

According to Tamiami Trail Dental Care’s website, Layton graduated from Temple University School of Dentistry in 1981.

He was a member of the American Dental Association, Florida Dental Association, and the Collier County Dental Association.

Layton has a wife and two sons.

Deputies arrested Layton on March 28 at his home. CCSO said detectives took multiple items of digital media “for further analysis.”

This is an ongoing investigation.
