Welcome To Fort Myers Beach

On Estero Island, Florida

As Sally Germain approached the track at the Homestead Miami Speedway, she grabbed something out of her shirt pocket and clutched it in her hand. It was the driver’s license of her late husband, Roger.

“I just lost him last year,” Sally said as cars speeded behind her. “He’s still right here,” she added while gently patting her heart.

Sally and Roger were married for 62 years. They spent their final years together at the Moorings Park community in Naples.

“I’m just starting to live again now,” Sally said. “This is the beginning.”

Roger was an avid car enthusiast, so when Sally heard Moorings Park was offering a trip to the Speedway, she jumped at the chance to go. Sally and 15 of her fellow residents were given the chance to drive the sports car of their choice.

The event was part of Moorings Park’s “Wanderlust” program, which gives seniors the chance to participate in thrilling adventures.

“They’re engaging physically, socially and emotionally,” Robert Sorenson. Moorings Park’s Director of Wellness said. “If there’s something you have wanted to achieve but haven’t yet been able to do — then why not?”

Sally felt participating in the experience gave her another chance to go on an adventure with Roger.

“My husband’s riding with me,” Sally said as she was about to get behind the wheel of a Porsche GT6.

And when her ride was done, she gently got out of the car and exclaimed to the world: “I want to do it again!”
