Welcome To Fort Myers Beach

On Estero Island, Florida

FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla. — A family continues to search for answers as to what happened to their loved one, who’s the only person still officially missing from Hurricane Ian.

James “Denny” Hurst was last seen on September 28, 2022, the day Hurricane Ian made landfall in Southwest Florida. The now 73-year-old was riding out the storm aboard his boat, the “Good Girl,” at the Island Bar Marina on Fort Myers Beach.

Since then, no one has seen Hurst or his boat.

“Nine weeks and one day, and it’s still no boat, no body,” said Shannon Vaughan. “It’s just frustrating. Sorry. It’s just frustrating.”

Yet still, there’s hope. Hope that somewhere or somebody will come across her father or his boat.

“What else can you do,” Vaughan said.

She’s back in Southwest Florida from her home in California. On Thursday, she met with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office Missing Person detectives. Just like they are, she’s here looking for answers as to what happened to her dad.

“Any way, shape or form, I don’t care if it’s bones. Just find him,” Vaughan said.

What she did find is someone stealing her father’s money. Shannon found out after detectives subpoenaed her father’s bank records.

“That’s when they found the random charges that we know were not my dad,” Vaughan said. “They appear to be doing it online in the Miami area. Just human scum does that.”

All while not a single person has heard from Denny. Shannon’s last message from her father said the worst will come “in the next hour or so… if you like, check with me in about two hours.” That was sent the day Ian made landfall.

To this day, she still waits to hear back.

“I’m still texting him. I texted him ‘Happy Birthday,’” she said. “I know I’m not going to get a response, but I’m still texting.”

Just like she’s waiting for that text back, Shannon is waiting to hear that the “Good Girl” was found, or better yet, her father.

But as the days pass, she knows that message may never come.

“It’s crossed my mind that, you know, we may never find him,” she said. “I miss him and I just want this to be done.”
