DESOTO COUNTY, Fla. — A 15-year-old Arcadia teen will not see the outside of jail, at least for now.

A DeSoto County judge denied bond for Ryan Watson Jr. He’s accused of shooting 17-year-old Daniel Lopez at the DeSoto County Fair in February.

During today’s testimony for pre-trial detention, new details were revealed by the lead investigator.

Police report Watson and Lopez are both allegedly gang members who had issues with one another. Lt. Troy Carrillo testified that the gang Watson is in made rap songs about killing Lopez. Carrillo also said there are videos of Lopez fighting Watson’s brother.

The night of the shooting, police say a group of males in ski masks approached Lopez, started a fight and ultimately ended with the teen being shot.

Prosecutors, in their motion for pretrial detention, brought up the fact Watson attempted to shoot more than once. However, the gun jammed. Two eyewitnesses identified the 15-year-old as the shooter.

The gun was never retrieved. Police testified they never found the suspect’s clothes during search warrants. However, they had received tips that the clothing was destroyed.

The defense argued that the clothing information is not confirmed. Attorney Kevin Shirley said his client has no prior criminal record and has been a lifetime resident of DeSoto County.

Ultimately, the judge refused to allow Watson bond. He will be held in another county, pending trial. The next hearing is set for June 5.
